Low-temperature cure electrocoats for automotive manufacturers

US coatings manufacturer PPG launches a suite of e-coat products that cure at lower temperatures than currently used technologies. The lower energy use can reduce CO2 emissions at manufacturing facilities.

“This is a game-changing technology,” said Garry Grant, PPG global product manager, substrate protection products, Automotive Coatings. “Conventional e-coats typically require higher oven temperatures to cure over thicker substrates and complex assemblies, resulting in uneven appearance and variations in color. According to PPG the “Enviro-Prime EPIC 200R” platform ensures well-cured films at lower baking temperatures, providing a more sustainable solution without sacrificing manufacturing throughput or coating performance. Depending on customer requirements the new coatings cures from 10 minutes at 150 °C up to 90 minutes at 190 °C.

As part of its growth strategy, PPG is focusing on partnering with customers to provide industry-leading innovations and digital solutions that provide productivity and sustainability benefits. In 2022, 39% of PPG’s sales were from sustainably advantaged products – the company aims to increase that to 50% of total sales by 2030 under its new environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets.

The e-coat is a water-based technology, providing high substrate protection for cars, appliances and airplanes and is applied at over 95% efficiency, minimizing material waste. Bath conditions are not significantly changed compared to PPG legacy technology.
